The rule set
as published, not as reinterpreted- Mark the range. The high and low of the half hour before the London open — 07:30–08:00 GMT. EUR/USD is the primary vehicle; GBP/USD and USD/CHF are the named alternates.
- Wait for a real break. At least 10 pips beyond the range high or low. The adaptive alternative is one-tenth of the daily ATR.
- Demand it holds. Price must remain beyond the breakout level for 10–15 minutes. That sustained direction is the day's expected momentum, not the five-minute poke.
- Know where you are wrong. The opposite side of the breakout's high/low is the identifiable area that says the trade is wrong. This desk uses that distance as 1R; the source page prescribes no fixed stop or target.
- Respect the calendar. Medium- and high-impact releases, option expiries, fixings and futures closes disrupt the pattern — consider exiting or trimming ahead of them.
- Watch the weekly range budget. If the ATR has not been reached Monday through Wednesday, watch Thursday and Friday closely. If it already has, treat late-week breaks as false-break and reversal candidates.
Rules per FOREX.com, “Opening Range Breakout Strategy in Trading”. Stop, target and R-multiple conventions on this desk are its own, built on the invalidation level that page identifies.
